SUP Fin Guide – Step 2: How a Paddler’s Experience Influences Fin Choice

26.06.2025

Whether you are an intermediate, advanced, or professional paddler – the right fin will make a big difference. It is important to select a fin that fits your skill level and paddling goals instead of simply following what professional athletes use. Many paddlers go too small too soon – while experimenting is encouraged, it’s always smart to keep a larger fin available for choppy race days. Remember: you’re not fast if you’re falling off! This step helps you identify what you really need from your next fin upgrade.

Paddler level & fin recommendation

Intermediate Paddlers

Intermediate paddlers are progressing to narrower race and touring boards that are more challenging to paddle than beginner boards. If you can paddle a good distance but want to improve tracking and stability, you’re in this category. A SUP fin offering more tracking and stability will be crucial. Pure speed is less important than staying dry – a larger fin with a thicker foil is ideal here.

Best Bet: RAY for all-around use or MALIKO for downwind paddling.

Advanced Paddlers

Advanced paddlers have logged many miles and usually paddle on narrow race boards but may still require stability or tracking support in windy or choppy conditions. As experience and fitness levels increase, these paddlers can explore smaller fins for higher speeds, especially in flat conditions. However, keeping a larger fin for rough days remains a smart choice.

Best Bet: TIGER for all-around use, MALIKO for downwind and surf, but keep a RAY for choppy conditions.

Professional Paddlers

Professional paddlers are highly experienced in all conditions, confidently using narrow race boards. They prioritize speed and typically choose smaller fins even in challenging conditions. Elite paddlers paddle at high cadence with frequent side switches and have no concerns about stability.

Best Bet: TIGER, SONIC, or CONDOR – depending on board, conditions, and personal preferences.
